Handwriting Exercises: A little unknown secret for grounding your child’s emotions

As more parents, teachers and friends become aware of how to help children perform better in the classroom, they ask what tools and resources are available for helping kids at home when they aren’t in school. Because so many tools and resources aren’t available in certain areas, parents, teachers, educators, Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Pediatric Therapists (PTs) need worksheets and handbooks to assist their children and students.

The handbook provides opportunities for parents and educators to work with their children at home to build neural pathways in the brain for better academic performance. Gaps in Learning

Many professionals and centers around the world focus their efforts on movement and working the body and the brain together for concentration, attention and focus, emotional grounding, impulse control, reading and comprehension. Several kids struggle in the classroom because so much of what schools require depends on the child’s left brain working properly. Jeanette Farmer, certified handwriting remediation specialist, said, “When the right brain dominant child is thrown into a left-brain system and expected to perform using processing skills not yet in place, stress and anxiety sets the child up for failure in trying to meet expectations.”

Many kids fall behind because their individual needs cannot be met in the classroom. While several of them do struggle with a learning challenge, a majority are mainstream children that can’t grasp certain concepts because there is a disconnection within the brain. Once we have determined where those gaps are in a child’s learning ability, we can use exercises, like those found here, to rewire the brain and bridge the gaps for higher learning development.

While many of these activities are useful and beneficial, activities that require your child’s full body for learning are also important. Crossing the midline activities, front to back exercises, and top to bottom movements are just a few children should do on a daily basis to get all areas of the brain working and ready for learning.
