Rewiring the Brain Beginner Handbook using Handwriting Exercises to Manage Emotions
This article provides helpful information on the Rewiring the Brain Beginner Handbook. Integrated Learning Strategies (ILS) is a learning and academic center. As a reminder, ILS is not a health care provider and none of our materials or services provide a diagnosis or treatment of a specific condition or learning challenge you may see in your child or student. If you seek a diagnosis or treatment for your child or student, please contact a trained professional who can provide an evaluation of the child.
If you have a child or student who experiences big emotions on a regular basis, sometimes far past what is age-appropriate, there is a secret that can help. Would you be surprised to learn that the secret is more handwriting!
Repetitive handwriting strokes can create a change in the brain for emotional grounding and self-regulation. Sometimes kids get stuck on the right side of the brain (emotional) and can’t regulate on their own. Introducing handwriting activities and exercises can help bridge the gaps in the brain for more logical thinking.
Rewiring the Brain Handbook Part I – Beginner
To create more of those neural connections in the brain, we have a series of Rewiring the Brain Handbooks that can help. This handbook was created specifically for those at a beginner level. Parents and therapists should base their choice of handbook on the level of the child rather than their age. Some kids may be older, but still at a beginning level.
The Rewiring the Brain Handbook Part I can help strengthen a child’s learning potential. The handbook provides opportunities for parents and therapists to use the exercises at home or in therapy sessions. Using repetitive handwriting strokes like these can build those neural pathways in the brain to help manage emotions.
The handbook’s main purpose is to activate the left side of the brain through handwriting exercises for the following:
- Critical thinking
- Logical reasoning
- Emotional stability
- Fine motor
- Handwriting
- Communication skills
- Reading
- Letter recognition
How the Rewiring the Brain Handbooks Help
Several kids struggle in the classroom because so much of what schools require depends on the child’s left brain working properly. When a child is “stuck” or hasn’t made the transition from right-brained learning to left-brained learning, you may notice gaps in their school performance.
Jeanette Farmer, certified handwriting remediation specialist, said, “When the right brain dominant child is thrown into a left-brain system and expected to perform using processing skills not yet in place, stress and anxiety sets the child up for failure in trying to meet expectations.”
Many kids fall behind because their individual needs cannot be met in the classroom. While several of them do struggle with a learning challenge, a majority are mainstream children that can’t grasp certain concepts because there is a disconnection within the brain. Once we have determined where those gaps are in a child’s learning ability, we can use exercises to rewire the brain and bridge the gaps for higher learning development.
While many of these activities are useful and beneficial, activities that require your child’s full body for learning are also important. Try a few of these activities below to support the child’s emotional well-being in combination with repetitive handwriting strokes.
What’s different about the Beginner Handbook?
The Rewiring the Brain Handbook Part I contains several fun and easy activities for children to do. Many of the exercises are targeted to help children that don’t like to read, write or spell. It provides an easy and simple experience that children don’t dread like they may when doing homework.
An older child can still use the beginner handbook if their handwriting skills are delayed or if they can only stay focused for a short period of time. If the child is progressing and appears to be doing the beginner handbook with ease, you can move forward to the intermediate level and then advanced.
