Forbrain Program for Auditory Processing and Speech and Language

This article provides helpful information about Forbrain and how it can help kids struggling with auditory processing and speech and language delays. Integrated Learning Strategies (ILS) is a learning and academic center. As a reminder, ILS is not a health care provider and none of our materials or services provide a diagnosis or treatment of a specific condition or learning challenge you may see in your child or student. If you seek a diagnosis or treatment for your child or student, please contact a trained professional who can provide an evaluation of the child.

If a child is struggling in a specific area, we sometimes tend to zone in on that one area. It can be hard to look at the whole picture to determine if there are other foundational problems causing that particular learning delay. And, if we get too hyper focused on this one area, we can get “stuck” thinking there is only one method or intervention that will do the trick.

In reality, it’s often a combination of several interventions and methods working together to help the child learn. Finding programs and interventions that help the child build strong foundational elements is the key to supporting higher learning concepts.

This past year, we have been researching and testing additional intervention methods to aid and support many of the programs we have at our center.

One program we have been working with is called Forbrain. This program is great for kids who may be struggling with any number of the following:

As you know, we are huge proponents of purposeful movement and how it helps build the brain for higher learning. During therapy sessions, classroom activities, or parent and child reading time, you can use Forbrain to help all of the areas above.

Adding Forbrain to a child’s regular therapy or home routine is a great way to support a child’s learning foundation for higher learning concepts.

How does it work?

Forbrain uses a simple training device that allows children to harness their voice to boost the brain. This is especially helpful for kids who are delayed in speech and language or who have trouble with auditory processing.

The program modifies the way a child hears their own voice in two different ways:

  1. The dynamic filter enhances specific frequencies of speech. It is constantly surprising the brain to increase memory, attention and sensory processing.
  2. Bone conduction transmits the child’s own voice via vibration. It gives the child a natural and higher quality perception of their own voice.

Forbrain also creates variations in voice perception and enhances fundamental sounds to help the child increase:

  • Attention span
  • Sensory Integration
  • Energy and awareness
  • Auditory discrimination
  • Phonological awareness
  • Sound articulation and fluency
  • Verbal memory
  • Learning
  • Reading and writing

How can I use Forbrain at home or with my students?

Using Forbrain is easy to use and very user friendly. Simply turn on the headphones and adjust them to the bone of the ear. The child then uses the microphone to speak and hear their own voice. You can even tell the kids they can be like rock stars on stage while using the headphones. The kids love it!

You can also use Forbrain during any of the following:

  • Speech and language therapy sessions
  • OT and PT therapy sessions
  • Classroom activities
  • Fine motor activities
  • Reading out loud
  • Singing out loud

Forbrain doesn’t come with any specific exercises, which makes it flexible for you to create your own session activities and materials. This also provides you with the opportunity to tailor the sessions to the level of the child and what they are specifically having trouble with at home and at school. However, you can connect Forbrain to a laptop or tablet to listen to audio recordings or an online therapy session if needed.
