Fall always creates excitement. The kids are back to school, the leaves change colors and the cold air begins to set-in. As kids get back to school, it’s a time where parents and teachers start becoming aware of areas in learning that may need work.

Attention and focus in the classroom is a huge area that most people notice first. Teachers may talk with parents about kids fidgeting at their desk or how kids are unable to stay seated for long periods of time. You may even find kids lying on their desk, slouching or even slinking down into the chair.

This is usually a sign of weak or poor core muscle strength. The child may not have enough core strength to physically stay seated for long periods of time. That’s why you may find the child trying to compensate by standing, slouching or laying on their desk.

To help children who may struggle with a weak core, we’ve created the Core Strength Pumpkin Slide Deck for parents, therapists, educators and professionals to use at home, in therapy sessions or in the classroom.

Kids with Weak Core Strength

A child with poor posture and attention and focus trouble in the classroom is one sign of weak core stability. Kids with a weak core tend to spend a lot of their time and mental energy adjusting their body to compensate, which impacts their ability to stay on task and focus on the teacher.

Some of the other signs of weak core stability may include the following:

  • Slouched or slumped posture
  • Frequently sits in the W-sitting position
  • Needs to frequently change positions
  • Is often out of their chair at school
  • Lies on desk
  • Fidgets at school or has poor attention skills
  • Trouble with fine motor tasks (holding a pencil, zippers, buttons, etc.)
  • Has poor balance and coordination skills
  • Appears to be tired and needs breaks during physical activities
  • Holds head up with their hands

Providing opportunities for kids to strengthen those core muscles will help attention and focus in the classroom as well as other learning activities. Core muscle is also important for helping kids copy notes from the chalkboard back to their paper, and writing letters and words across the page.

The Core Strength Pumpkin Slide Deck

The Core Strength Pumpkin slide deck was specifically created for parents, therapists and educators to help their kids and students with core stability. Each activity is adaptable to the child’s level and allows them to work up to higher levels. You can even incorporate a stuffed pumpkin or ball into the activities to make it more fun.

These activities will also strengthen the neck, shoulders and arms for copying notes, writing letters and words, and holding the head and torso upright to listen to the teacher. Performing these activities consistently can help kids perform tasks better and allow them the physical energy to focus on what is happening in the classroom.
