Most people don’t know cup stacking activities can actually make kids smarter. So why not use fun games and activities like this to build a child’s brain? The kids won’t even know that’s what you are trying to do. They will just think they are having fun.
We created this simple cup stacking slide deck to encourage kids to cross the midline of the body. Each time a child stacks a cup, they are using both the left and right sides of the brain. These types of activities can strengthen a child’s problem-solving ability, critical thinking and even attention and focus.
This slide deck is perfect for those working with kids at home, virtually, in a classroom setting or within in-practice therapy sessions. You can even exercise a little competition in a group setting if you want.
Cup stacking activities like these are meant to be playful, but will also test the child’s motor, visual and coordination skills.
Crossing the Midline using Cup Stacking Activities
Why is it important to get kids to cross the midline? Crossing the midline is important for many reasons. If a child is overly emotional, struggles with completing tasks or is falling behind in school, they may need crossing the midline activities to help both the right and left sides of the brain work together.
These types of activities can calm big emotions, help with reading and writing and it can reorganize the brain for higher learning. The easiest way to get kids to cross the midline is through games and activities like cup stacking.
There are even research studies that show the benefits of cup stacking and how reading scores improved in many students who participated in these activities.
Crossing the Midline
In this cup stacking slide deck, follow the arrows to help kids complete the patterns using both the left and right hands to cross over the midline of the body. As the child becomes better at the patterns, encourage them to complete the tasks faster (as long as they are done correctly). This creates an opportunity for kids to process the information faster and at a higher level.
Bilateral Coordination
This cup stacking slide deck can also be used to strengthen and improve a child’s bilateral coordination. Bilateral coordination goes hand-in-hand with crossing the midline and encourages kids to use both hands at the same time to stack the cups. Kids should use both hands to complete the patterns. Strengthening a child’s bilateral coordination will help them write words across the page while holding their paper, copy notes from the chalkboard and even tie their shoes.
Visual Processing
The cup stacking slide deck is especially important for helping kids strengthen their visual processing skills. When stacking cups, it’s not just the physical act of crossing the midline with their hands. It’s also with their eyes. kids must move their eyes across the midline of the body to track and complete the patterns. These types of activities greatly enhance a child’s reading ability. It helps them track words across the page and comprehend the pattern they are completing.
