Who doesn’t love conversation hearts?! They provide so many fun and playful ways to help kids communicate and use words to express emotions. However, they can be used for more than just sending a message to someone you care about.

In the Valentine’s Conversation Heart Activity packet, we are giving parents, therapists and other professionals activities that build certain skills in the classroom using conversation hearts.

The activity packet includes many sheets that target multiple areas of learning. We provide kids with challenges in sequencing, tracing, color matching and patterning. Each area of focus uses fun conversation hearts to enhance the experience so they don’t even realize they are doing “work.”

Activity Packet Benefits

We created the Valentine’s Conversation Heart Activity packet with many areas of focus in mind. Here are a few areas where kids may strengthen their skills.

Tracing Activities

In this packet, we use conversation hearts to trace fun Valentine images. Tracing may seem like a simple task, but it is an important step in helping kids establish impulse control and emotional grounding. Tracing gets the hands working together with the eyes for reading development. It also helps kids commit to strokes, lines, and patterns. Most importantly, it builds muscle memory so writing skills become more automatic.

Sequencing

Sequencing activities can help kids develop and improve their math skills. It also helps them visualize and retain numbers in their short-term and long-term memory. In this activity packet, we use conversation hearts to build towers based on differing numbers.

Color Matching

Matching activities in the activity packet give kids the opportunity to match the conversation hearts with the coordinating color. Matching exercises help kids build visual skills and exercise their logical thinking skills. As we build these areas of learning, we also strengthen the child’s memory skills and understanding of how to categorize and identify objects through their visual system.

Patterning

Pattern activities strengthen a child’s ability to understand and know what happens next in a sequence. Many activities are based around an A-B-A-B pattern. In this activity packet, the pages require kids to use this A-B-A-B pattern to complete the sequence using conversation hearts. The overall goal is to help kids improve their logical thinking skills, executive functioning, and reasoning skills.
