Having good balance is a very important element that contributes to a child’s attention and focus. That is why balance beams and balance beam toys can be so good for helping kids concentrate in school. Sitting still and paying attention requires strong postural skills and good balance. If the child does not have secured balance, the learning foundation may become unstable as they try to navigate and orient themselves within their environment.

Our balance is controlled by the cerebellum in the brain, which is also part of the lower levels of the brain. If the lower levels of the brain are not fully developed it can interfere with higher cognitive function and learning in later years.

The balance system often works hand-in-hand with the visual and auditory systems. Balance functions in cooperation with vision when the child responds to visual stimuli in front of them or on the sides (peripheral vision). Hearing supports balance when it alerts us of something happening outside of our vision.

All three areas of development are needed to help children pay attention to the teacher, track and read words across the page, and write letters and numbers. To help kids further develop these skills, balance beam toys can be used to create fun and engaging activities to help kids strengthen their balance system.

If you suspect a child is struggling with balance, you can check out all the signs and symptoms here or you can do a few simple balance tests here.

Balance Beam Toys

Incorporating balance beam toys in a child’s weekly routine will not only help improve balance, but the child’s higher functioning skills. Balance beam toys keep the body centered, which allows both side of the body to become equally involved. They are designed to improve integration and timing of both hemispheres of the brain. Additionally, balance beam toys can help kids integrate the hemispheres of the brain through bilateral coordination, visual and tactile senses.

To get your child or students involved in balance beam activities, try a few of our favorite balance beam toys below. These balance beams are great for therapy centers, home play areas or classroom settings. For the most benefit, encourage kids to perform balance movements slow and purposefully to activate the brain for higher learning.
